Karma & Punishment

 Karma & Punishment -

I've always been a bit skeptical of the concept of karma, but never willing to completely rule it out. It seems like a very man-made concept. It can be comforting to believe that what goes around always comes around. That the people who hurt us will always be repaid in kind by the universe. But observation of reality offers scant evidence to back this up. Now of course it is said that karma transcends this one life and that it can affect future lives as well. But that never sat well with me. If it is about retribution of actions, shouldn't it happen to the exact personality that created the karma, and shouldn't they understand why? How are they supposed to learn from it if they're being punished in another life under another personality with absolutely no memory whatsoever of their past crimes. Shouldn't the point of a karmic system be rehabilitation rather than just inflicting mindless suffering just to get an eye for and eye? Why not punish them in the afterlife with their full awareness of the past actions that brought about?

Karma has also been used to justify a lot injustice. People are told not to defend themselves because even that can create negative karma. The wealthy and powerful use it to exploit and oppress the poor by claiming that they're rich because they have good karma and vice versa the poor are poor because of their bad karma, ignoring the real life mechanisms by which the poor are actually made poor. Furthermore, if the rich are such good people and so blessed by God, why are they so often such psychopaths? Why are the richest 1% involved in child sex trafficking like Jeffrey Epstein. Why do they abuse their workers and pay them starvation wages, letting people suffer and starve while they hoard wealth like medieval dragons?

In fact, more often than not, the opposite of karma appears to be true. The most wicked assholes prosper and get off Scott-free while the good are abused, mistreated, and severely oppressed. Hence the need for magick to bring much needed balance.
