A Scientific Explanation of Why Vampire Bats Like Blood
An AP News article by Christina Larson entitled "Scientists figure out how vampire bats got a taste for blood" declares that, "Scientists have figured out why vampire bats are the only mammals that can survive on a diet of just blood."
By comparing the genome of vampire bats to over two dozen different species of bats, they discovered thirteen genes that are either missing or do not work. These tweaked genes adapted them to a sanguine diet of blood consumption.
Vampire bats live in Central and South America. At night they go out to bite, cause bleeding and lick up the blood, usually from livestock.
Most animals are unable to live only on blood because they need carbs and fat, but the vampire bats mainly need iron and protein. One three out over one thousand different species of bats practice blood-drinking. Most bats eat fruits, bugs, and occasionally small animals such as fish and frogs.
The main creatures that survive on blood are fleas, bedbugs, mosquitoes, and leeches, none of which are mammals. So this makes the vampire bat is an extremely unique animal. A bat researcher at Tulane University named Hannah Kim Frank comments, "It’s totally bizarre and amazing that vampire bats can survive on blood — they are really weird, even among bats."
Perhaps this is part of why the vampire bat is such a potent and powerful psychological and magickal symbol?
